Which SSD test matches your work? Cache, fill level and real files

A peak MB/s figure answers a different question from a long copy or responsive application launch.

Start with the task. Loading games, opening small project files and writing a long video export are different workloads. This guide helps you read a suitable independent test and prepare a limited purchase check; it is neither a Specufo benchmark nor an instruction to fill the whole drive.

Your purchase checklist

  • Record exact part number, capacity and cooling edition.
  • Identify real file sizes, source and destination.
  • Assess short transfers separately from sustained writing.
  • Inspect test fill level, cooling, interface and firmware.
  • Arrange backups and a suitable return/support route.

Start with one recognisable task

Choose something you actually do: open a project, import photos or move a large folder. Record its duration and the data source. An internet download or copy from a slow external drive can be limited by that other source. Comparing the new SSD’s peak alone does not resolve such a bottleneck.

Three kinds of cache are different

HMB uses computer memory; dedicated DRAM sits on the SSD. A pseudo-SLC write buffer instead uses part of flash for temporarily faster writing. DRAM does not mean a drive can never slow during a long copy. The 990 EVO Plus and 990 PRO provide concrete examples with different memory arrangements; do not decide on that feature alone.

Look beyond the fast beginning

A brief test can fit largely within the write cache. For repeated large writes, find independent sustained tests: how is the buffer filled, is recovery time allowed and how much space is free? The reviewed 2TB 9100 PRO and SN7100 tests use long writes; EVO Plus testing also varies fill level. Results apply to tested capacity and conditions.

Match conditions before comparing

Compare capacity, firmware, M.2 slot, cooling, operating system and fill level. An actively cooled desktop test does not predict laptop battery life. Empty and nearly full drives can behave differently. A 2TB test does not measure 500GB or 8TB, despite an equal family name.

Perform a small, safe check on your own host

Back up first and follow computer/SSD manufacturer instructions. Check recognition after restart and sleep. Repeat a normal non-destructive copy of your files with the same source and destination; record conditions. Investigate the whole chain and seek support for errors or unexplained slowdowns. Do not disable protections or change settings blindly.

Make the purchase decision afterwards

Choose sufficient capacity, suitable dimensions and cooling, then compare confirmed totals for the exact edition and destination. A synthetic record, one fast owner copy or one error does not decide the purchase. Keep unresolved points unknown; capacity and speed are separate choices. Sources checked 29 October 2026.
